A refined 1843 portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter depicting Leonilla, Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, in a relaxed, elegant pose.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter, a German painter who achieved international success as a portraitist for the European aristocracy, completed this work in 1843. The subject is Leonilla, Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, depicted in a relaxed, reclining pose that was unconventional for formal portraiture of the period. She rests upon a divan, draped in a white silk gown with a prominent pink sash, while a dark purple shawl provides a contrast to the lighter tones of her attire.
The setting is an open loggia, which allows for a view of a distant, calm sea under a soft, twilight sky. To the right, an oleander plant adds a touch of natural colour, while the architectural elements, including the draped curtains and the patterned floor, frame the figure. Winterhalter demonstrates his technical ability in the rendering of textures, particularly the sheen of the silk and the delicate quality of the lace and pearls.
Winterhalter was known for his ability to capture the likeness and social standing of his sitters while incorporating elements of romanticism. This portrait avoids the rigid formality often associated with royal commissions, opting instead for an atmosphere of leisure and comfort. The composition draws the eye across the horizontal plane, balancing the figure of the Princess against the open horizon. The painting remains a clear example of the artist's skill in managing light and colour to create a harmonious, balanced image. It reflects the aesthetic preferences of the mid-nineteenth-century elite, who favoured portraits that combined personal character with a sense of refined ease.
