A 1971 Color Field painting by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring soft, fluid bands of colour applied through her signature soak-stain technique.
Leveling, created in 1971, is a representative example of Helen Frankenthaler's mature work in the Color Field tradition. The composition relies on the soak-stain technique, a method she pioneered in the early 1950s. By thinning acrylic paint with turpentine or water, she allowed the pigment to permeate the raw canvas rather than sitting on the surface as a traditional impasto layer. This process creates a sense of atmospheric depth and luminosity, where the colour appears to exist within the fabric of the material itself.
The visual structure of Leveling is defined by broad, horizontal bands of colour that suggest a horizon line, though the work remains firmly abstract. A large, pale lavender field occupies the centre, providing a quiet space that contrasts with the more saturated forms above and below. At the top, a band of blue is punctuated by a darker blue rectangular shape, while the bottom section features a deep magenta mass. These forms are not rigid; their edges are soft and bleeding, characteristic of the fluid application of paint. The interaction between these distinct zones of colour creates a rhythmic balance across the canvas.
Frankenthaler's approach to painting prioritised the physical properties of the medium. She often worked with the canvas laid flat on the floor, allowing her to move around the work and apply paint from all sides. This physical engagement is visible in the way the colours bleed into one another and the raw canvas. The work avoids representational imagery, focusing instead on the emotional and optical effects of colour relationships. The result is a composition that feels expansive and open, inviting the viewer to engage with the interplay of light and pigment.
