This 1925 oil on canvas by Piet Mondrian exemplifies his mature De Stijl style. 'Lozenge Composition with Red, Black, Blue and Yellow' features a diamond-shaped canvas with geometric forms, primary colours, and black lines arranged in a balanced composition.
Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch artist and a major figure in the development of abstract art. He is best known as one of the founders of De Stijl (The Style) movement. Mondrian developed a non-representational form he termed Neo-Plasticism. This new style consisted of simple geometric forms, primary colours, and black and white, arranged on a grid. His intention was to reflect the underlying spiritual harmony and order of the universe. 'Lozenge Composition with Red, Black, Blue and Yellow', created in 1925, exemplifies Mondrian's mature style. The canvas is rotated 45 degrees, presenting a diamond shape. Thick black lines intersect to create rectangles and squares, filled with white, red, blue, and yellow. The composition is carefully balanced, with the colours and lines arranged to create a sense of harmony and equilibrium. Mondrian sought to eliminate all subjective feeling from his art, aiming for a universal and objective form of expression.
