Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist (1872-1944), is celebrated as one of the pioneers of abstract art. He developed a non-representational form he termed neoplasticism. This style consisted of white ground, upon which he painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the primary colours. Mondrian believed this reflected a spiritual harmony and order.
