This engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES depicts the Virgin Mary seated in a garden, holding the Christ Child. She is flanked by Saint Barbara, who holds her characteristic tower, and Saint Dorothy, who carries a basket of flowers. The composition follows the tradition of the hortus conclusus, or enclosed garden, a common motif in fifteenth-century devotional art that symbolises the purity of the Virgin.

Master ES was a prolific engraver active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century. His work is identified by the initials ES, which appear on many of his plates. This print demonstrates his technical skill in the use of the burin to create varied line weights, which define the folds of the drapery and the textures of the figures. The figures are arranged in a balanced, triangular formation, with the Virgin at the centre. The background features a radiant halo behind the Virgin, which draws the eye towards the central figures. The ground is rendered with small, rhythmic marks to suggest grass and low-lying plants, while the figures themselves exhibit the elongated proportions and soft facial features typical of the period.

The inclusion of specific attributes, such as the tower for Saint Barbara and the basket for Saint Dorothy, allows for the immediate identification of the saints. The Christ Child reaches towards the basket, creating a sense of interaction between the figures.
