A detailed 1617 engraving by Willem Jacobszoon Delff, portraying the theologian Marcantonio de Dominis within an ornate cartouche.
This engraving by Willem Jacobszoon Delff depicts Marcantonio de Dominis, the Archbishop of Spalatro, who was a notable theologian and scientist during the early seventeenth century. Delff, a skilled Dutch engraver, produced this work in 1617, capturing the subject within an elaborate oval cartouche. The portrait reflects the formal conventions of the period, presenting the Archbishop with a steady gaze and a full, white beard, dressed in ecclesiastical attire.
The composition is structured around a central oval frame, which is adorned with decorative scrollwork typical of the era. Latin inscriptions surround the portrait, detailing the subject's age and titles, while a further poetic inscription appears on the tablet below. The use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques creates depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the subject's robes and the subtle shading of his features.
Marcantonio de Dominis was a controversial figure, known for his conversion to Anglicanism and his subsequent return to the Catholic Church. This print serves as a historical record of his appearance during his time in England. Delff's technical precision is evident in the clarity of the lettering and the controlled application of line to define the contours of the face and the folds of the fabric. The work is a fine example of seventeenth-century printmaking, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with Dutch portrait engraving. It offers a glimpse into the intellectual and religious climate of the time, documenting a figure whose life was marked by significant theological shifts and international movement.
