This work by Fra Angelico, a Dominican friar and painter, forms part of the series of panels depicting the life of Christ, originally commissioned for the silver chest in the Basilica of Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The composition captures the biblical narrative of Herod ordering the death of children in Bethlehem.

Fra Angelico organises the scene within a classical architectural setting, featuring a loggia with columns that frame the chaotic action. King Herod is positioned on a raised balcony, observing the violence below. The foreground is occupied by soldiers in contemporary fifteenth-century armour, contrasting with the desperate figures of the mothers. The artist employs a clear, narrative approach, using colour to distinguish the groups: the soldiers are clad in dark, metallic tones, while the women wear garments of muted pink, blue, and red.

Latin inscriptions on scrolls at the top and bottom of the panel provide the scriptural context for the event, a common feature in devotional works of this period. The figures are rendered with a focus on gesture and expression, conveying the emotional weight of the subject through posture and facial detail rather than exaggerated movement. The spatial arrangement remains relatively shallow, typical of the artist's approach to narrative clarity. This panel demonstrates the transition from the International Gothic style towards the more structured, humanistic perspective characteristic of the early Italian Renaissance. The work is now held in the collection of the Museo di San Marco in Florence, where it remains a primary example of the artist's narrative skill and his ability to integrate theological themes with formal composition.
