Description

A bold, expressive oil painting by Piet Mondrian, featuring the Winkel mill rendered in saturated reds and yellows against a shimmering sky.

Piet Mondrian painted Mill in Sunlight: The Winkel Mill in 1908, a period when his practice shifted away from traditional Dutch realism towards a more subjective, expressive application of colour. This work depicts the Winkel mill, a subject he returned to several times during his career. Unlike his later geometric abstractions, this composition relies on a bold, non-naturalistic palette to convey the intensity of the Dutch sun.

The mill occupies the centre of the frame, rendered in deep, saturated reds and oranges that contrast sharply against the bright yellow sky. Mondrian employs a pointillist-influenced technique, using small, distinct brushstrokes to build the form of the structure and the surrounding atmosphere. The sky is composed of blue dabs set against a golden ground, creating a shimmering effect that suggests heat and light. The ground plane is equally expressive, with horizontal strokes of red and yellow that anchor the mill while maintaining a sense of movement.

This painting captures a moment of transition in Mondrian's career. He was experimenting with the expressive potential of colour, influenced by Fauvism and the work of Vincent van Gogh. The structure of the mill remains recognisable, yet the artist prioritises the emotional impact of the colour relationships over precise topographical accuracy. The heavy, impasto application of paint adds a physical texture to the surface, further distancing the work from the smooth finishes of his earlier academic training. By focusing on the interaction between the red mill and the yellow environment, Mondrian creates a visual tension that defines the work. It remains a clear example of his early twentieth-century experimentation with light and form, long before he arrived at his signature grid-based compositions.

Artist Biography

Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist who helped pioneer abstract art, is best known for his non-representational paintings that he began making around 1920. But before his iconic grids of black lines and primary colours, Mondrian was a skilled landscape artist, deeply influenced by the Symbolist movement. His early works, often featuring windmills and fields bathed in ethereal light, reveal a fascination with the spiritual in nature – a theme that would underpin his entire artistic journey.

Mondrian's move towards abstraction was gradual but decisive. He was influenced by Cubism after moving to Paris, but he ultimately distilled his art to its most essential elements. This radical simplification led to the birth of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that sought universal harmony through pure abstraction. Mondrian believed that by reducing painting to its fundamental components – line, colour, and form – he could reveal a deeper, more spiritual reality.

Though he lived and worked in Europe for much of his life, Mondrian eventually settled in New York City during World War II. His final paintings, such as "Broadway Boogie Woogie," reflect the vibrant energy of his new urban environment. This iconic work, with its pulsating rhythms and dynamic composition, stands as a testament to Mondrian's enduring quest to capture the essence of modern life through the language of pure abstraction. His legacy continues to inspire artists and designers today.
