A rare miniature album by Zeng Yandong, featuring a wooden case, floral slipcase, and calligraphic inscriptions, reflecting the private art of the Qing era.
This object represents the tradition of the scholar-artist in late 18th-century China. Zeng Yandong, a figure known for his eccentric personality and unconventional approach to painting, created this miniature album as a portable companion for a literatus. The set includes a small, dark-wood-bound volume, a protective slipcase decorated with a floral textile pattern, and a larger wooden storage box. The lid of the storage box features calligraphic inscriptions, identifying the contents and the creator.
Miniature albums of this type were designed for personal contemplation. They allowed the owner to carry small-scale depictions of figures and natural scenes, which could be examined in private or shared with close associates during gatherings. The contrast between the plain wooden exterior and the decorative textile slipcase reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where utility and beauty were balanced. The small scale of the work requires the viewer to engage closely with the brushwork, which is characteristic of Zeng Yandong's style. His work often displays a sense of playfulness and spontaneity, moving away from the rigid academic standards of the time.
By documenting this specific set, we observe the intersection of book arts, calligraphy, and painting. The preservation of the original housing provides context for how such items were stored and protected. The floral pattern on the slipcase adds a layer of visual interest, contrasting with the minimalist aesthetic of the wooden components. This piece serves as a record of the material culture surrounding the Chinese literati, where the physical object was as important as the imagery contained within. It remains a rare example of a complete, cased miniature album from the Qing period, offering a glimpse into the private artistic practices of the era.
