A refined Japanese woodblock print by Yukeisha, depicting a hand mirror, rouge bowl, and brush, typical of the elegant surimono tradition.
This woodblock print by the artist Yukeisha belongs to the genre of surimono, a form of privately commissioned, limited-edition print often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Surimono prints are characterised by their high production quality, frequently incorporating metallic pigments, embossing, and fine paper stock. This specific work depicts a collection of vanity items: a black-lacquered hand mirror with its cover, a small ceramic bowl containing rouge, and a delicate application brush. The objects rest upon a piece of patterned fabric, rendered with subtle textures that contrast against the solid, dark surface of the mirror case. The composition is balanced and sparse, typical of the refined aesthetic favoured by the literati who commissioned such pieces. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top of the print suggests that the image was created to accompany a kyoka, or comic verse, which would have been selected for its seasonal or thematic relevance to the objects shown. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the deep black of the lacquer and the soft red of the rouge bowl to draw the eye. The print functions as a quiet observation of domestic luxury and personal grooming rituals. By focusing on these specific, everyday objects, Yukeisha elevates them into a study of form and material. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the subtle decorative motif on the mirror cover. It remains a representative example of the sophisticated visual culture of the early nineteenth century, where art, literature, and daily life intersected through the medium of the printed page.
