Frida Kahlo
A complex, allegorical painting by Frida Kahlo that explores the origins of history and leadership through a dense arrangement of historical and mythological figures.
Painted in 1945, Moses is one of the most ambitious compositions by Frida Kahlo. The work functions as a dense, encyclopaedic meditation on the nature of leadership, history, and human development. At the centre of the composition, a foetus rests within a shell, suspended beneath a radiant sun. This central figure represents the titular Moses, though the imagery draws heavily from the artist's personal interest in psychoanalysis and the collective unconscious. Surrounding this central motif, Kahlo arranges a vast array of historical and mythological figures. These include political leaders, philosophers, and religious icons, all positioned to suggest a cyclical view of human existence. The composition is structured around a series of dualities, balancing the celestial with the terrestrial, and the ancient with the modern. The lower portion of the painting depicts the infant Moses in his basket, floating amidst a landscape that bridges the gap between the divine order above and the chaotic history of humanity below. Kahlo utilised a meticulous, almost miniature-like technique to render the numerous faces and symbols that populate the canvas. The palette is warm, dominated by ochres, oranges, and earthy browns, which unify the disparate elements into a cohesive visual narrative. Unlike her more intimate self-portraits, this work demonstrates her capacity for large-scale, allegorical storytelling. It reflects her engagement with the political climate of the mid-twentieth century, as well as her fascination with the origins of cultural myths. The painting remains a primary example of her ability to synthesise personal experience with broader historical themes, creating a complex visual language that invites careful observation of every detail.

Started painting in a body cast after a bus crash at eighteen, married Diego Rivera twice, and told Breton she was not a Surrealist.
