A powerful Post-Impressionist study of the Alpilles mountains, featuring rhythmic brushwork and a striking contrast between golden earth tones and cool blues.
Painted during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures the rugged terrain of the Alpilles mountain range. Vincent van Gogh applied paint with characteristic energy, using rhythmic, swirling brushstrokes to define the geological forms of the hills. The composition is anchored by a small, dark cottage nestled at the base of the slopes, surrounded by dense, rounded foliage. A pale, winding path occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the imposing mass of the mountains.
The colour palette relies on a contrast between the golden-ochre tones of the earth and the cool, pale blues of the sky. Van Gogh used dark outlines to separate the various elements of the scene, a technique influenced by his interest in Japanese woodblock prints. The sky is rendered with short, agitated strokes that suggest movement and atmospheric pressure, typical of his late period in the south of France. Unlike his earlier, more naturalistic works, this painting prioritises the emotional weight of the environment over precise topographical accuracy.
This piece demonstrates the artist's focus on the tactile quality of oil paint. The surface is heavily textured, with impasto applications that catch the light and create a sense of physical depth. By simplifying the forms of the mountains into undulating shapes, Van Gogh created a visual rhythm that guides the eye across the canvas. The cottage, though small, provides a necessary point of human presence within the vast, untamed natural setting. This work remains a clear example of his ability to transform a specific location into a subjective experience through colour and line.
