A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a Russian figure on horseback, produced during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists produced these prints to satisfy public curiosity regarding the appearance and customs of foreigners. The work depicts a Russian figure on horseback, rendered with the characteristic stylisation of the Utagawa school.
The subject wears a dark coat with a blue mantle, seated atop a black horse. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned in profile to allow for a clear view of the attire and the horse. Yoshitora employs a flat application of colour, typical of the medium, with bold outlines defining the forms. The background is a uniform, warm yellow, which allows the darker tones of the horse and the figure's clothing to stand out. Textual elements, including the title cartouche and descriptive calligraphy, are integrated into the composition, providing context for the viewer.
Yoshitora was a prolific designer of such prints, often focusing on military or diplomatic figures from various nations. These works provide a record of how Japanese society perceived the influx of Westerners during the mid-nineteenth century. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock process, with clean registration of the colour blocks. The horse is depicted with a degree of anatomical simplification, common in prints of this era, where the focus remained on the exotic nature of the subject rather than strict realism. This piece is an example of the visual documentation that defined the early interactions between Japan and the West, capturing a moment of cultural exchange through the lens of traditional printmaking techniques.
