A refined page from a 17th-century Ottoman calligraphic album by Hafiz Osman, featuring precise thuluth and naskh scripts framed by gold floral illumination.
This page from a murakka, or calligraphic album, displays the mastery of Hafiz Osman, a figure of immense importance in the history of Ottoman calligraphy. Osman is credited with refining the naskh and thuluth scripts, establishing a standard of proportion and elegance that influenced generations of scribes within the Ottoman Empire. His work is characterised by a balance between the structural rigour of the letters and the fluid grace of the ink strokes.
The central panel features a large-scale thuluth script, executed with precision and control. The surrounding text, written in a smaller naskh script, provides a contrast in scale and density. The composition is framed by a border of gold-leaf floral motifs, which are rendered in a style typical of the period. These decorative elements provide a visual frame for the written word, which remains the primary focus of the piece. The use of gold and polychrome pigments within the illumination reflects the high status of such albums, which were often commissioned by the elite or produced as gifts for scholars and patrons.
Osman's approach to the page layout demonstrates a clear hierarchy of information. The larger script commands attention, while the smaller text invites closer inspection. The paper itself, often treated with a sizing agent to allow the reed pen to glide smoothly, remains a neutral ground that allows the black ink to stand out with clarity. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the metallic sheen of the gold illumination, offering a view into the aesthetic values of 17th-century Istanbul. The work is a study in discipline, where every curve and connection of the script is the result of years of training and adherence to established aesthetic canons.
