A Post-Impressionist still life by Meijer de Haan, featuring a ceramic jug and onions rendered with textured brushwork and an earthy palette.
Meijer de Haan, a Dutch painter who became a significant figure within the Pont-Aven school, produced this still life during his period of close association with Paul Gauguin in Brittany. The composition focuses on a collection of domestic objects: a large, earthen vessel, a smaller ceramic jug decorated with blue motifs, and a cluster of onions arranged in the foreground.
The work displays the stylistic shift de Haan underwent after leaving the academic traditions of Amsterdam. His brushwork here is deliberate and textured, moving away from traditional realism toward a more synthetic approach. The palette relies on earthy tones, with the warm, burnt-orange hues of the onions providing a contrast to the cooler blues and greys of the background and the ceramic jug.
De Haan’s application of paint is direct, with visible strokes that define the volume of the objects without relying on fine detail. The arrangement is compact, pushing the subjects toward the front of the picture plane. This compression of space is characteristic of the experimental methods adopted by the artists working in Pont-Aven at the time. The light source is soft, creating subtle shadows that ground the objects on the surface. By focusing on humble, everyday items, de Haan demonstrates an interest in the formal qualities of shape and colour, prioritising the arrangement of forms over narrative content. This piece offers a clear view into the artist's transition toward modernism, reflecting the influence of his contemporaries while maintaining a distinct, personal approach to the still life genre.
