A classic Post-Impressionist still life by Paul Cézanne, featuring a balanced arrangement of fruit and ceramics against a patterned background.
Paul Cézanne produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with the structural possibilities of paint. The composition features a green glazed jar, a white ceramic cup, and a collection of apples arranged upon a rumpled white cloth. The objects rest on a wooden surface, set against a patterned wallpaper background that flattens the pictorial space.
Cézanne rejects traditional perspective in favour of a more analytical approach. He constructs the forms through small, deliberate brushstrokes that build volume and weight. The apples are not merely rendered as round objects; they possess a tactile quality achieved through the layering of colour. The white cloth serves as a device to manipulate light and shadow, creating a series of folds that guide the eye across the foreground. The wallpaper pattern, with its geometric repetition, creates a tension between the three-dimensional objects and the two-dimensional surface of the canvas.
This painting demonstrates the artist's focus on the relationship between colour and form. Rather than relying on outlines, Cézanne defines the edges of the jar and the fruit through subtle shifts in tone and hue. The palette remains grounded in earthy ochres, muted greens, and cool greys, which allows the warmer tones of the fruit to emerge. By reducing the scene to its essential components, the artist invites the viewer to observe the physical reality of the objects rather than their symbolic meaning. This approach to still life painting influenced many subsequent artists who sought to break away from the constraints of academic realism. The work remains a clear example of the artist's method of constructing a scene through the careful application of paint, prioritising the internal logic of the composition over photographic accuracy.
