A classical engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting the deities Neptune and Ceres, representing the union of sea and land.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts the Roman deities Neptune and Ceres, figures representing the elemental forces of the sea and the harvest. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver active in Antwerp and Cologne, produced this work during a period when mythological subjects were frequently used to explore the relationship between human industry and the natural world. Neptune stands on the left, identified by his trident and the horses at his feet, which reference the myth of his creation of the horse from the earth. Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, stands on the right, holding a cornucopia overflowing with produce, symbolising the abundance of the land.
The composition is typical of sixteenth-century Northern Mannerism, featuring elongated figures and a clear, structured arrangement of symbolic elements. The background shows a distant, schematic landscape with architectural forms, providing a sense of scale without distracting from the primary figures. The Latin inscription at the base of the print, 'Fundat equos, Neptune, tibi terra icta frementes: Illis alma Pales pabula sufficiam', links the two deities through their respective domains: Neptune provides the horses, while Ceres provides the sustenance required for them to thrive.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precise line-work characteristic of De Bruyn's output. The shading is achieved through a system of parallel hatching and cross-hatching, which creates volume in the figures and texture in the drapery. As a printmaker, De Bruyn was known for his ability to translate complex allegorical themes into accessible visual narratives. This piece is a fine example of the era's interest in classical iconography, rendered with the clarity and discipline of the Dutch and Flemish printmaking tradition.
