A sensitive portrait of a young girl by American realist Robert Henri, captured with loose, expressive brushwork and a focus on character.
Robert Henri, a central figure in the development of American realism, painted this portrait of Nora in 1924. The work displays his characteristic approach to portraiture, which prioritised the directness of the subject over formal academic polish. Henri often sought to capture the individual spirit of his sitters, frequently choosing children or people from diverse backgrounds as his subjects.
The composition is straightforward, placing the young girl against a dark, neutral background. This choice directs the viewer's attention to her face, which is rendered with a soft, painterly touch. Her expression is calm and direct, reflecting the artist's interest in the psychological presence of his subjects. The brushwork is loose and confident, a technique Henri developed through his study of European masters like Frans Hals and Diego Velázquez. He applied paint with a sense of immediacy, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible in certain areas.
Nora wears a dark garment contrasted by a pale, soft-toned scarf or collar, which provides a visual anchor for the composition. Her hair is pulled back with a bow, adding a touch of youthful detail. The palette is restrained, relying on deep browns and blacks to create a sense of depth, while the lighter tones of her skin and clothing provide a necessary balance. This portrait is representative of Henri's later career, during which he continued to refine his ability to convey character through economical means. By avoiding excessive detail, he allowed the personality of the sitter to emerge as the primary focus of the piece. The work remains a clear example of his philosophy that art should be a reflection of life, captured with honesty and technical skill.
