A study of the chapel at Notre Dame de la Clarté by French Post-Impressionist Gustave Loiseau, featuring his signature cross-hatched brushwork.
Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the later generation of Impressionists, produced this study of the chapel at Notre Dame de la Clarté in Brittany. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to light and texture, employing a technique often described as cross-hatching or 'en treillis'. By applying paint in short, rhythmic strokes, Loiseau creates a surface that appears to shimmer, capturing the specific atmospheric conditions of the Breton coast.
The composition centres on the stone chapel, its spire rising against a sky filled with soft, moving clouds. The surrounding terrain is rendered with a palette of earth tones, greens, and ochres, reflecting the rugged nature of the region. A solitary figure walks along the path in the foreground, providing a sense of scale and quietude to the scene. Unlike the earlier Impressionists who focused on the fleeting effects of light in urban settings, Loiseau frequently returned to the same locations at different times of day or seasons to observe how light altered the appearance of architecture and nature.
Loiseau was a student of the Académie Julian and later found inspiration in the works of Pissarro and Gauguin. His time in Pont-Aven and his subsequent travels through France allowed him to develop a distinct visual language. This painting avoids the heavy outlines found in some of his contemporaries' work, preferring instead to build form through the accumulation of colour. The result is a representation of the French countryside that feels both observed and constructed. The chapel, a site of pilgrimage, is depicted here not as a monumental structure, but as an element integrated into the natural rhythm of the environment. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, allowing for a close examination of the artist's brushwork and his method of layering colour to achieve a sense of depth and movement.
