A monochromatic etching by Edouard Manet, depicting his famous composition of a reclining woman and her maid.
This etching is a smaller, monochromatic interpretation of Edouard Manet's controversial 1863 oil painting, Olympia. Produced in 1867, this print captures the composition that caused a sensation at the Paris Salon. The work depicts a reclining female figure, modelled after Victorine Meurent, who gazes directly at the viewer. Beside her, a maid presents a bouquet of flowers, while a black cat arches its back at the foot of the bed.
Manet utilised the etching medium to translate the stark contrasts of his original painting into a series of hatched lines and tonal variations. The dark background provides a heavy atmosphere, pushing the pale figure of the woman forward. The lines are precise, capturing the texture of the bed linens and the specific posture of the figures. Unlike the large-scale canvas, this print offers a more intimate view of the scene, allowing for a closer examination of the artist's draftsmanship.
This version was created for a publication, helping to disseminate Manet's work to a wider audience beyond the confines of the gallery space. The print retains the confrontational nature of the original, as the subject remains unidealised and direct. The inclusion of the cat, a symbol often associated with independence or domesticity, adds a layer of narrative tension to the composition. Through this etching, Manet demonstrates his ability to adapt his painterly style to the graphic arts, maintaining the clarity of his vision while working within the constraints of the copper plate. It remains a significant example of nineteenth-century printmaking, reflecting the shift towards modern subjects in French art.
