A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai, depicting a scene from the 'Seven Komachi' series with elegant figures and seasonal motifs.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai belongs to the series 'Furyū Nana Komachi' (Fashionable Seven Komachi). The series adapts the traditional themes associated with the ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi, reinterpreting them through the lens of contemporary Edo-period fashion and social life. In this specific composition, Koryūsai depicts the theme of 'Amagoi', or praying for rain, by showing a woman attaching a poem to a maple tree branch, accompanied by two attendants.
The visual arrangement employs the characteristic flat perspective of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The figures are positioned before a bamboo fence, with a stylised moon and cloud formations providing a backdrop. Koryūsai uses a balanced colour palette, where the muted tones of the garments contrast with the autumnal red of the maple leaves. The line quality is calligraphic, defining the folds of the kimonos and the delicate features of the women with precision. The print demonstrates the artist's skill in capturing the grace of his subjects while maintaining the decorative requirements of the medium.
Koryūsai was a prolific designer of prints during the mid-Edo period, known for his work in the 'hashira-e' (pillar print) format and his series depicting beautiful women. His approach to composition often involved placing figures in domestic or natural settings that allowed for the display of textile patterns and seasonal motifs. This work reflects the cultural interest in literary allusions, where the historical figure of Komachi is transformed into a contemporary beauty. The print serves as an example of the sophisticated aesthetic prevalent in the pleasure districts of Edo, where such images were produced for a growing urban audience interested in both fashion and classical poetry.
