Ono Falls on the Kisokaidō Road - Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai produced this woodblock print as part of his series, Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces, published around 1832. The series demonstrates his mastery of the medium, particularly in the depiction of moving water. Here, the Ono Falls descend in a vertical, white column, contrasting with the surrounding rock formations and the dark, atmospheric sky above.

The composition employs a distinct sense of scale. The towering cliff face on the left dominates the frame, while the human figures on the bridge appear small, emphasising the power of the natural environment. Hokusai uses Prussian blue, a pigment that became available in Japan during this period, to provide depth to the water and the shadows of the crags. The inclusion of a small shrine perched on the cliff edge adds a human element to the rugged terrain, suggesting a site of pilgrimage or spiritual observation along the Kisokaidō road.

Technically, the print relies on precise carving and the careful application of colour blocks. The water is rendered with rhythmic, parallel lines that suggest both speed and volume. The surrounding foliage and earth are treated with a flatter, more decorative approach, which balances the dynamism of the waterfall. This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of travel, geography, and the physical properties of water. It remains a primary example of the late Edo period print tradition, where the observation of nature was filtered through a highly stylised graphic language.
