Eishi, a former painter for the shogunate, brought a refined sensibility to the ukiyo-e genre, often favouring elongated figures and a delicate line quality that departed from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.

The subject is shown in a seated posture, holding a folding fan, with her kimono featuring a repeating floral pattern.
