A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting the poet Ono no Komachi in a contemporary Edo-period setting.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts the legendary poet Ono no Komachi, reimagined within the aesthetic conventions of the late eighteenth-century Edo period. As part of the series Stylish Parodies of the Six Poetic Immortals, the work reinterprets classical literary figures through the lens of contemporary fashion and urban culture. Eishi, a former painter for the shogunate, brought a refined sensibility to the ukiyo-e genre, often favouring elongated figures and a delicate line quality that departed from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The subject is shown in a seated posture, holding a folding fan, with her kimono featuring a repeating floral pattern. The composition balances the figure against a vertical screen, which provides a sense of spatial depth while maintaining the two-dimensional clarity characteristic of the medium. The colour palette relies on soft, muted tones, including pale ochre and subtle coral, which harmonise with the paper ground. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper right corner provides a literary anchor, connecting the visual representation to the historical persona of Komachi, who was celebrated for her beauty and poetic skill.
Eishi was instrumental in the development of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. His approach prioritised grace and poise, moving away from the exaggerated features seen in earlier prints. This work demonstrates his ability to integrate traditional themes with the stylistic preferences of the floating world, offering a view into the cultural preoccupations of the time. The print remains a representative example of the sophisticated printmaking techniques employed by Eishi and his collaborators during this period.
