A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei, depicting the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I in a dramatic samurai role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I in a dramatic role. Shunei, a student of Katsukawa Shunsho, became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which captured the intensity of the kabuki stage. The composition focuses on the actor's posture, conveying a sense of movement and tension through the angular lines of the kimono and the placement of the swords. The actor is positioned beneath the suggestion of a cherry tree, a common motif in Japanese art that provides a seasonal context for the performance.
The print demonstrates the characteristic style of the Katsukawa school, which moved away from the idealised beauty of earlier ukiyo-e artists to focus on the specific facial features and expressions of individual actors. The lines are precise and controlled, defining the folds of the hakama and the texture of the fabric. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted pinks to maintain focus on the figure. The background remains largely empty, a technique that directs the viewer's attention entirely to the actor's performance and costume.
Katsukawa Shunei was active during the late eighteenth century, a period when the popularity of kabuki theatre reached a high point in Edo. His work provides a record of the theatrical conventions and costume designs of the era. This print is an example of the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e process, where the collaboration between the artist, carver, and printer resulted in a final image that balanced graphic clarity with the ephemeral nature of the stage. The print captures a specific moment of dramatic action, typical of the roles Onoe Matsusuke I performed during his career.
