A sombre, realist portrait of an elderly woman by Dutch painter Meijer Isaäc de Haan, showcasing his mastery of light and shadow.
Meijer Isaäc de Haan, a Dutch painter active in the late nineteenth century, produced this portrait of an elderly woman during his earlier period. Before his move to Brittany and his association with the Pont-Aven school, de Haan worked within the traditions of Dutch Realism. This work reflects the influence of seventeenth-century masters, particularly Rembrandt, in its use of chiaroscuro and the sombre, earthy palette.
The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view against a dark, indistinct background. The artist focuses on the textures of the woman's clothing and the weathered quality of her skin. The white cap provides a stark contrast to the deep shadows surrounding her face, drawing the viewer's attention to her expression. The brushwork is controlled, showing a careful observation of light as it falls across the folds of her shawl and the contours of her features.
De Haan often turned to members of the Jewish community in Amsterdam for his subjects during this phase of his career. The painting avoids idealisation, opting instead for a direct, honest representation of the sitter. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the figure to create an intimate encounter. This piece offers a view into the artist's technical development before his later shift toward the more experimental colour palettes and flatter forms associated with his time in France. It remains a representative example of his ability to capture character through traditional oil techniques and a restrained tonal range.
