A 1866 woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a bustling Parisian harbour scene in the Yokohama-e style.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, produced in 1866, belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e. These prints emerged during the late Edo period as Japan began to reopen its borders, reflecting a fascination with foreign cultures and technologies. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was particularly noted for his depictions of Western subjects, which were often based on imported photographs or illustrations rather than direct observation.
The composition presents a stylised view of a Parisian waterfront. A large, multi-masted sailing ship dominates the left side of the frame, moored near a prominent, green-painted lighthouse or beacon. The architecture in the background suggests a European cityscape, rendered with the characteristic flattened perspective and bold outlines of the Ukiyo-e tradition. In the foreground, figures dressed in mid-nineteenth-century European attire—men in top hats and frock coats, women in crinoline dresses—mingle along the quay. The inclusion of these figures provides a sense of scale and narrative, capturing the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding the appearance and customs of Westerners.
The print employs a palette of deep blues for the water and sky, contrasted with the muted tones of the clothing and the structural elements of the harbour. The cartouche in the upper right corner contains Japanese text, providing context for the series and the specific location depicted. As a historical document, the work illustrates the intersection of Japanese artistic conventions with the influx of global imagery during the Meiji Restoration era. It offers a glimpse into how foreign locales were interpreted and visualised by artists who had never travelled beyond their own shores, resulting in a unique fusion of traditional Japanese printmaking techniques and Western subject matter.
