Alexandre Jacovleff, a Russian artist who later adopted French citizenship, painted 'Penelope'. The artwork depicts the mythological figure Penelope, wife of Odysseus, known for her fidelity during his long absence. She is often portrayed weaving a shroud for Odysseus's father, Laertes, which she unravelled each night to delay choosing a new husband from her persistent suitors. The painting shows Penelope seated, surrounded by her weaving and the tools of her craft. In the background, a classical architectural setting is populated with figures, some nude, possibly representing the suitors or other characters from the Odyssey. The palette is muted, with soft blues, greys, and browns dominating the scene, creating a contemplative atmosphere.
