A refined 17th-century Japanese kacho-ga painting by Tawaraya Sôtatsu, featuring a delicate arrangement of magnolia, peonies, and dandelions on silk.
This work by Tawaraya Sôtatsu represents the refined aesthetic of the early Edo period. As a master of the Rimpa school, Sôtatsu utilised a technique that balances decorative composition with natural observation. The painting features a vertical arrangement of flora, where the magnolia branches reach upwards, contrasting with the dense, rounded forms of the peonies and the delicate, low-growing dandelions at the base.
The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the subtle shifts in tone to define the petals and leaves. The ink work is precise, providing structure to the branches while the colour application remains soft and controlled. This approach to kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, avoids excessive detail in favour of a harmonious balance between the subjects and the negative space of the silk background.
Sôtatsu was a central figure in the development of the Rimpa style, which often drew inspiration from classical Japanese literature and seasonal motifs. His ability to manipulate ink wash and pigment created a sense of depth without relying on traditional Western perspective. The composition is carefully considered, guiding the eye from the ground-level dandelions up through the peony blossoms to the magnolia buds. This piece reflects the period's appreciation for the fleeting nature of the seasons, captured here with a sense of quiet poise. The work is a fine example of the decorative yet restrained sensibility that defined the artistic output of the Tawaraya workshop during the 17th century.
