Perugia Altarpiece (Right Panel) - Fra Angelico

This panel originates from the polyptych commissioned for the chapel of Saint Nicholas in the church of San Domenico in Perugia. Fra Angelico, a Dominican friar, executed this work during the 1430s, a period when his style began to incorporate more naturalistic modelling while maintaining the traditional gold-ground aesthetic of the late Gothic period.

The right panel depicts Saint John the Baptist on the left and Saint Catherine of Alexandria on the right. Saint John is shown in his traditional guise, wearing a camel-hair tunic beneath a violet mantle, holding a staff and a scroll inscribed with the words Ecce Agnus Dei. His expression is solemn, reflecting his role as the precursor to Christ. Beside him, Saint Catherine of Alexandria is depicted with her customary attributes: the crown, signifying her royal lineage, and the spiked wheel, the instrument of her martyrdom. She holds a palm frond, a symbol of her victory over death.

The figures are set against a gilded background, a technique that flattens the pictorial space and directs attention to the symbolic nature of the saints. The drapery of their garments is rendered with careful attention to volume and weight, particularly in the folds of the violet cloak and the red mantle worn by Saint Catherine. The use of tempera allows for a precise application of colour, resulting in the clear, luminous quality characteristic of the artist's work. This panel demonstrates the transition from the stylised forms of the medieval tradition to the humanistic focus of the Renaissance. The figures possess a quiet dignity, their poses balanced and their features rendered with a gentle, idealised grace. The work remains a primary example of the devotional art produced for the Dominican order in Italy during the fifteenth century.
