A refined woodcut by Aristide Maillol, depicting a scene from the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe with characteristic classical simplicity.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol illustrates a scene from the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. The composition depicts the elderly cowherd Philetas sharing his wisdom with the two young protagonists. Maillol, primarily known for his sculptural work, applied a similar focus on simplified form and classical balance to his graphic output. The figures are rendered with clean, deliberate lines that strip away unnecessary detail, allowing the narrative focus to remain on the interaction between the characters.
Maillol produced this series of woodcuts for a limited edition publication of the Longus text, commissioned by the publisher Henri Creuzevault. His approach to the medium is marked by a rejection of decorative excess. Instead, he employs a stark, monochromatic aesthetic that recalls the clarity of Greek vase painting. The figures occupy a shallow, compressed space, which emphasises their physical presence and the rhythmic quality of their poses. The shepherd Philetas is shown in a seated position, gesturing as he speaks, while Daphnis and Chloe listen with attentive postures. The work demonstrates Maillol's ability to translate the weight and volume of his bronze sculptures into the two-dimensional plane of the printed page.
This print reflects the artist's lifelong engagement with classical themes and his desire to return to a more primitive, essential mode of representation. By focusing on the fundamental human elements of the story, Maillol creates a visual language that is both timeless and direct. The woodcut technique itself, with its bold outlines and lack of tonal shading, reinforces the clarity of the scene. It is a fine example of early twentieth-century book illustration, where the artist sought to harmonise the visual image with the printed word, creating a cohesive aesthetic experience for the reader.
