A 14th-century hanging scroll by Jakusai depicting the ascetic En no Gyōja accompanied by his two demon attendants, Zenki and Goki.
This hanging scroll depicts En no Gyōja, the legendary founder of Shugendō, a syncretic Japanese religious tradition combining elements of Buddhism and Shinto. Attributed to the monk-painter Jakusai, the work reflects the aesthetic conventions of the 14th century. The figure is shown in a mountain setting, wearing the distinctive fur-trimmed robes and high wooden clogs associated with mountain ascetics. He holds a staff, a common attribute for those who traverse rugged terrain in pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.
At his feet, two attendants are present: Zenki, the red-skinned demon, and Goki, the green-skinned demon. These figures represent the dual nature of the forces En no Gyōja is said to have subdued and converted to his cause. The composition is structured vertically, typical of hanging scrolls intended for devotional use. The background features stylised clouds and rocky outcrops, rendered with a muted palette that emphasises the solemnity of the subject. The silk support has aged over the centuries, resulting in a darkened tone that adds to the historical character of the piece.
Jakusai, a monk of the Tendai sect, was known for his ability to capture the spiritual gravity of Buddhist subjects. His brushwork is precise, defining the contours of the robes and the expressions of the figures with clarity. The inclusion of the two demons provides a contrast to the calm, seated posture of the ascetic. This work functions as both a religious icon and a historical record of the iconography surrounding En no Gyōja during the Muromachi period. The mounting, featuring a repeating wheel pattern, is consistent with traditional Japanese scroll presentation, framing the central image while maintaining the focus on the primary subject.
