A Fauvist portrait by Sonia Delaunay, 'Portrait of Philomene' features bold colours and expressive brushstrokes, capturing the subject with a sense of immediacy and energy.
Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) was a French artist, who, along with her husband Robert Delaunay, co-founded the art movement known as Orphism. Her work extended into textile, fashion, and set design. Born in Ukraine, she spent most of her career in Paris. Delaunay's style evolved from Fauvism and Post-Impressionism to abstract art, characterised by bold colours and geometric shapes. She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964. 'Portrait of Philomene' exemplifies Delaunay's early Fauvist style. Painted in 1907, the portrait features a woman with a dark hat and a high white collar. The subject's face is rendered in broad planes of colour, with pink and yellow hues defining the cheeks and forehead. The background is a wash of blues and yellows, complementing the subject's complexion. The brushstrokes are visible and expressive, contributing to the painting's overall sense of immediacy and energy. The composition is simple, focusing on the subject's face and upper body, with minimal detail in the background.
