A 1817 engraving by Jacob Ernst Marcus featuring portraits of Dutch artists Cornelis Pronk, Abraham de Haen, and Jan de Beijer.
This print by Jacob Ernst Marcus, dated 1817, depicts three significant figures in Dutch topographical art: Cornelis Pronk, Abraham de Haen, and Jan de Beijer. The composition arranges the three men in a tiered, bust-length format, a common convention for commemorative portraiture of the period. Marcus employs precise line work, utilising the etching and engraving techniques typical of early nineteenth-century printmaking to define the facial features, period clothing, and the subtle textures of the subjects' wigs and hats.
Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759) is positioned prominently, reflecting his status as a draughtsman known for his meticulous topographical studies. Beside him, Abraham de Haen and Jan de Beijer are rendered with equal attention to detail. The background remains largely atmospheric, consisting of fine, horizontal hatching that directs the viewer's focus toward the subjects. The print serves as a visual record of these artists, who were instrumental in documenting the Dutch landscape during the eighteenth century. Marcus, a Dutch engraver and painter, captures the distinct physiognomy of each man, providing a clear window into the appearance of these historical figures. The work is a fine example of the technical skill involved in reproductive printmaking during the early nineteenth century, where the engraver sought to translate the character of the sitters into a durable, monochrome medium. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the disciplined approach of the era, prioritising accuracy and formal structure over decorative flourish.
