A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Johann Balthasar Probst, depicting Abraham Wagner within a classical stone-effect frame.
This engraving by Johann Balthasar Probst depicts Abraham Wagner, a figure associated with the intellectual and religious circles of Augsburg during the early eighteenth century. Probst, a member of a prolific family of engravers based in Augsburg, utilised the formal conventions of the period to convey the status and gravity of his subject. The portrait is presented within a trompe-l'oeil stone frame, a common device in Baroque printmaking that creates a sense of physical presence and depth.
The subject is shown in a bust-length format, wearing the traditional clerical or academic attire of the era, including a prominent ruff collar. His expression is direct and composed, typical of the sober portraiture favoured for scholarly or civic figures. Below the oval frame, a small, circular emblem features a sunburst over a mountainous scene, likely a personal or family crest that provides additional context to Wagner's identity.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the burin. Probst employs varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the fabric, the softness of the hair, and the solidity of the stone pedestal. The lighting is controlled, focusing attention on the face of the sitter while allowing the darker garments to recede into the background. This print reflects the standard of professional portraiture produced in Augsburg, a city that functioned as a major centre for the European print trade. The composition is balanced and restrained, adhering to the aesthetic expectations of the time for commemorative or biographical documentation. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print captures the fine lines and tonal gradations of the original copperplate engraving, offering a clear view of the craftsmanship involved in eighteenth-century graphic arts.
