An exquisite seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Kilian, depicting the nobleman Marcus Fugger within an elaborate heraldic cartouche.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts Marcus Fugger, a member of the prominent Fugger banking family of Augsburg. The portrait is executed with the technical precision characteristic of the early seventeenth-century German school. Kilian, a master of the burin, employs a variety of hatching techniques to render the textures of the subject's fur-lined garment, the delicate lace of the ruff, and the metallic sheen of the chain worn across his chest.
The composition is framed within an oval cartouche, a common device in portrait prints of the period. This frame is decorated with elaborate scrollwork and heraldic motifs, which serve to denote the status and lineage of the sitter. Latin inscriptions encircle the portrait, providing details of Fugger's titles and his service to the imperial court. The inclusion of coats of arms at the corners and the base of the frame further reinforces the social standing of the individual portrayed.
Kilian's work demonstrates a high degree of control over light and shadow. The face of Marcus Fugger is modelled with subtle gradations of tone, capturing a sense of individual character and gravity. The surrounding ornamental border is balanced by the central figure, creating a formal presentation that aligns with the conventions of aristocratic portraiture in the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. This print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the period, where the marriage of portraiture and heraldic display communicated power and historical continuity. The work remains a fine example of the high standard of craftsmanship maintained by the Kilian family of engravers in Augsburg.
