This abstract composition by El Lissitzky features intersecting geometric forms in muted colours, creating a dynamic sense of space and movement. A classic example of Suprematism.
El Lissitzky, a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist, and architect, was an important figure in the Russian avant-garde. He helped develop Suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designed exhibition displays and propaganda for the Soviet Union. His Proun compositions explored spatial constructions using geometric forms. Proun 4B features a dynamic arrangement of geometric shapes in muted colours. Rectangles and bars in shades of light blue, yellow, grey, and black intersect and overlap, creating a sense of depth and movement. Thin red lines add small accents. The composition appears to float against a white background, evoking a sense of architectural space and utopian vision. Lissitzky's Prouns aimed to merge painting and architecture, exploring the potential of abstract forms to create new spatial environments.
