A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Frans Crabbe van Espleghem depicting the tragic classical myth of Pyramus and Thisbe.
This engraving by the Flemish master Frans Crabbe van Espleghem depicts the tragic conclusion of the Ovidian myth of Pyramus and Thisbe. The composition presents the two lovers in a moment of finality: Pyramus lies deceased upon a stone structure, while Thisbe stands beside him, poised to take her own life with the same sword that ended his. The artist employs a distinct graphic style, utilising fine hatching and cross-hatching to model the figures and the surrounding environment.
Crabbe van Espleghem, active in Mechelen during the early sixteenth century, was a significant figure in the development of printmaking in the Low Countries. His work often reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance aesthetics, particularly in the anatomical rendering of the figures, combined with the traditional Northern European attention to detail. The background features a fortified town and a dense forest, elements that provide a sense of place to the classical narrative. The lion, visible in the distance, serves as a subtle reference to the catalyst of the lovers' demise.
The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The artist balances the foreground figures with the architectural and natural elements of the setting, creating a clear spatial hierarchy. The use of line work to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the stone wall shows a high level of control over the burin. This work offers a window into the reception of classical literature in the sixteenth-century Netherlands, where such tragic tales were frequently adapted for visual media. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between humanistic learning and the technical craft of the engraver during the Northern Renaissance.
