A formal copperplate engraving by Johann Martin Bernigeroth, depicting the Leipzig scholar Quirin Hartman Schacher in a traditional eighteenth-century portrait style.
This copperplate engraving by Johann Martin Bernigeroth depicts Quirin Hartman Schacher, a notable figure in the academic and legal circles of Leipzig. Bernigeroth, a skilled engraver active in the mid-eighteenth century, produced numerous portraits of scholars, theologians, and public officials, often working within the conventions of the era to convey status and intellectual authority.
The composition follows the established format of the period, placing the subject within an oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth. Schacher is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous periwig and a cravat, attire typical of the professional class in the eighteenth century. The drapery, which cascades over the edge of the plinth, adds a sense of movement and volume to the otherwise static portrait. The plinth itself bears an inscription detailing the subject's identity and his tenure as a consul in Leipzig, a common feature in commemorative portraiture designed to document the subject's public life.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision characteristic of Bernigeroth's output. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the curls of the wig. The background, featuring architectural elements, provides a sense of setting without distracting from the primary focus on the sitter. This print is a representative example of the portrait engraving tradition in Germany, where such works were frequently commissioned for frontispieces in academic publications or as individual commemorative sheets. The monochromatic palette and the formal arrangement reflect the aesthetic priorities of the time, prioritising clarity, dignity, and the accurate representation of the sitter's social standing.
