A detailed lithograph by Sir Muirhead Bone depicting the industrial activity of a naval shipyard during the First World War.
Ready for Sea is a lithograph by the Scottish artist Sir Muirhead Bone, produced during his tenure as an official war artist for the British government. The work captures the industrial scale of naval preparation during the First World War. Bone focuses on the mechanical and human activity within a shipyard, where a large vessel sits moored alongside a towering crane.
The composition relies on the contrast between the verticality of the crane on the left and the complex rigging of the ship on the right. Bone uses quick, expressive marks to define the structural elements of the dockyard. The lines are economical, yet they convey the weight of the steel and the busy atmosphere of the site. Figures are scattered along the dock and the gangway, providing a sense of scale against the massive machinery.
Bone was known for his technical precision and his ability to document the realities of wartime production. This print is part of a larger series documenting the British war effort, specifically the naval shipyards that were essential to the conflict. The artist avoids romanticising the scene, opting instead for a direct, observational approach. The focus remains on the interplay of light and shadow across the metallic surfaces of the ship and the surrounding infrastructure. The work offers a glimpse into the logistical operations that supported the fleet, presented with the clarity characteristic of Bone's draughtsmanship. His work remains a primary visual record of early twentieth-century industrial life.
