A vibrant collage by Eduardo Paolozzi, 'Real Gold' presents a collection of mid-century consumer goods and idealized figures, reflecting the post-war fascination with American consumer culture and the burgeoning advertising industry.
Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) was a Scottish artist, best known for his Pop Art sculptures and screenprints. He is considered a founder of the British Pop Art movement. Paolozzi studied at Edinburgh College of Art in 1943, briefly at the Slade School of Fine Art, and then worked in Paris from 1947 to 1949, where he encountered artists such as Jean Arp, Constantin Brâncuși, Georges Braque, and Alberto Giacometti. This exposure influenced his later work. He returned to London in 1949. 'Real Gold' (1949) is a collage constructed from magazine clippings and advertisements. The work presents a collection of mid-century consumer goods and idealized figures. A smiling woman's face dominates the left side, while images of a car, motorcycle, lipstick, and orange juice are arranged around her. The composition reflects the post-war fascination with American consumer culture and the burgeoning advertising industry. The juxtaposition of disparate elements creates a sense of visual overload, a characteristic of Pop Art's commentary on mass media.
