This handscroll, titled Rear View of the Mountain Villa for Watching Clouds, is a work by the Qing Dynasty artist Yu Zouyan. Executed in 1744, the piece follows the traditional Shanshui style, which translates to mountain-water painting. The composition presents a serene view of a villa complex situated within a mountainous region, where the architecture is integrated into the natural topography.
The artist employs a delicate ink-wash technique to render the rolling hills and the mist that settles between the peaks. The villa structures are depicted with precise, thin lines, showing the walled courtyards and tiled roofs characteristic of the period. The foreground features cultivated fields and clusters of trees, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the vastness of the terrain. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted greens to maintain the atmospheric quality of the scene.
In Chinese art, such works often reflect the scholar-official ideal of retreating from public life to a secluded residence.
