Reminiscence of Jinling - Wang Gai

Wang Gai, a painter and theorist active during the early Qing Dynasty, is perhaps best known for his contributions to the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. This work, Reminiscence of Jinling, reflects the traditional shanshui (mountain and water) style, which prioritises the atmospheric representation of nature over strict topographical accuracy. The composition employs a horizontal handscroll format, allowing the viewer to traverse the scene as if walking through the riverine environment of Nanjing, historically known as Jinling.

The imagery features a series of gentle, rolling hills that recede into the distance, framed by clusters of trees and traditional architecture. Small boats navigate the calm waters, providing a sense of human scale against the expansive geography.
