Nicolas Poussin depicts the dramatic moment from Tasso's epic where the sorceress Armida encounters the sleeping knight Rinaldo.
This work depicts a scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem, Gerusalemme Liberata. Nicolas Poussin captures the moment the sorceress Armida discovers the sleeping Christian knight, Rinaldo. Initially intending to kill him, she finds herself overcome by love instead. A small Cupid figure stands beside her, restraining her hand as she prepares to strike, symbolising the intervention of passion over violence.
Poussin employs a clear, structured composition typical of his early Roman period. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, set against a backdrop of trees and a muted sky. The contrast between the metallic sheen of Rinaldo's armour and the soft, flowing drapery of Armida's garments demonstrates the artist's attention to texture and light. The palette relies on primary colours, with the deep blue of Armida's dress and the golden tones of Rinaldo's tunic providing a visual balance to the composition.
The painting reflects the influence of Venetian masters, particularly Titian, in its handling of colour and the romanticised treatment of the subject matter. Poussin avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the psychological tension between the two protagonists. The stillness of the sleeping knight contrasts with the active, emotional state of the sorceress, creating a narrative pause that invites the viewer to consider the impending shift in the story. This piece remains a representative example of the artist's ability to synthesise classical themes with the dramatic sensibilities of the seventeenth century.
