A geometric abstraction by Josef Albers, 'Rolling After' uses a limited palette and spatial ambiguity to explore the visual effects of colour and shape.
Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a German-American artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and the United States, helped to define the course of 20th-century modernism. He is perhaps best known for his abstract paintings, particularly the series 'Homage to the Square', which he began in 1950. These works explore colour relationships and perception through simple, nested squares. Albers's theories on colour interaction were highly influential, articulated in his book 'Interaction of Color' (1963). He taught at the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College, shaping generations of artists. 'Rolling After' presents a study in geometric abstraction, rendered in a limited palette of black, white, and grey. The composition features a grid-like structure that appears to recede into space, creating an illusion of depth. Two circular forms, one solid and one outlined, add a dynamic element to the otherwise rigid geometry. The interplay of light and shadow further enhances the spatial ambiguity, challenging the viewer's perception of form and dimension. The work reflects Albers's interest in exploring the visual effects of colour and shape, and his commitment to reducing art to its essential elements.
