A colour study by Josef Albers, 'Study for Homage to the Square: Beaming' is part of his series exploring colour theory through geometric forms. The work features nested squares of blue and green, creating an optical effect.
This work is a study by Josef Albers (1888-1976), part of his celebrated series, 'Homage to the Square'. Albers, a German-born artist who later taught at the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College, explored colour theory through simple geometric forms. This series, begun in 1949 and continued until his death, investigates the subjective experience of colour perception. Each painting consists of three or four squares of solid colour, each nested within the other. In 'Study for Homage to the Square: Beaming', Albers uses shades of blue and green. The squares are arranged concentrically, with the smallest, a mid-tone green, at the centre. This is surrounded by a darker blue-green, then a lighter, brighter blue. The colours interact, creating an optical effect where the hues appear to shift and change depending on their relationship to one another. Albers's technique involved applying thin layers of paint to create a smooth, matte surface, further emphasising the purity of the colour and form.
