A close-up study of roses and a beetle, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890 during his time in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Painted in May 1890, during his final weeks at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures a close-up view of roses. Vincent van Gogh produced several studies of flowers during this period, often focusing on the interplay between light and shadow within dense foliage. The composition is tight, excluding the background to focus entirely on the blossoms and the small insect resting upon a petal.
The palette relies on deep, dark greens and earthy tones, which provide a heavy contrast to the pale yellow of the roses. Van Gogh uses thick, directional brushwork to define the structure of the leaves and the soft, layered petals of the flowers. The presence of the beetle adds a specific, observational detail to the scene, grounding the work in the immediate reality of the garden he was observing.
This painting reflects the artist's interest in the natural world and his ability to find subjects within his immediate surroundings. The application of paint is deliberate, with visible strokes that follow the contours of the forms. Unlike his earlier, more experimental works, this piece demonstrates a controlled approach to colour and form. It remains a clear example of his late style, where the focus shifted toward the observation of nature and the physical properties of paint on canvas. The work is currently held in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
