A detailed Persian miniature depicting a royal horse inspection, featuring intricate figures and a decorative gold-on-blue floral border.
This work by 'Aliquli Jabbadar, a court painter active during the late Safavid period, captures a scene of royal activity. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. The upper section depicts a ruler seated on a raised platform, surrounded by courtiers and attendants. The lower section shows the inspection of horses, with grooms and handlers managing the animals in a courtyard setting. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the Persian miniature tradition, which allows for the clear organisation of numerous figures and animals within a single frame.
The painting is notable for its decorative border, which features a repeating floral motif in gold against a deep blue ground. This frame provides a contrast to the lighter, more muted tones of the central scene. Jabbadar was known for his interest in European artistic techniques, which he integrated into the traditional Persian style. This is visible in the subtle modelling of the figures and the attempt to create a sense of depth in the architectural elements, though the overall aesthetic remains firmly within the Safavid idiom.
The horses are rendered with individualised markings and postures, reflecting the importance of equestrian culture in the Safavid court. The figures are dressed in period-appropriate attire, with attention paid to the textures of their garments and the details of their headgear. The use of gold leaf throughout the work, particularly in the border and the architectural details, adds a sense of luxury. This piece provides a window into the courtly life of seventeenth-century Persia, documenting the social hierarchies and the aesthetic preferences of the era. The meticulous application of paint and the balance between the crowded lower scene and the more ordered upper register demonstrate the technical skill required in the production of such courtly manuscripts.
