This diptych, attributed to the Master of the Holy Blood, depicts Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara, two figures frequently represented in early sixteenth-century Netherlandish art. The artist, named for a specific devotional work in Bruges, operated within the tradition of the Early Netherlandish school. These panels demonstrate the characteristic attention to material texture and costume detail common to the period.
Saint Catherine is shown on the left, identified by the sword, while Saint Barbara appears on the right, holding a palm branch and a book. Both figures are positioned before a low wall, which opens onto a distant, atmospheric view of a landscape. The artist employs a precise, linear technique to render the heavy brocades, fur-lined sleeves, and pleated linen chemises worn by the saints. The colour palette is dominated by gold, deep blue, and rose, reflecting the fashion of the Burgundian court during the early 1500s.
The composition is balanced, with the figures framed by architectural elements that suggest a domestic or ecclesiastical setting. The faces are rendered with a smooth, porcelain-like finish, typical of the Bruges workshops of the time. The inclusion of specific attributes allows for the identification of these saints, who were popular subjects for private devotional altarpieces.
