An engraving by Agostino Carracci depicts Saint Peter holding the keys to heaven. The print features fine lines and detailed shading, typical of the artist's engraving style.
This engraving of Saint Peter is by Agostino Carracci, an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist. He was a member of the Carracci family of artists who played an important role in the development of Baroque art in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Agostino, along with his brother Annibale and cousin Ludovico, founded an art academy in Bologna called the Accademia degli Incamminati, which promoted a style based on the study of classical art and Renaissance masters. In this print, Saint Peter is depicted as a standing figure, holding the keys to heaven in his left hand and gesturing with his right. He wears a draped robe and mantle, with a halo above his head bearing the inscription 'S. PETRUS'. In the lower right corner, a papal tiara rests on the ground. The background features a simple, lightly sketched horizon line. The image is rendered with fine, precise lines, typical of engraving, creating a sense of volume and texture through hatching and cross-hatching.
