A traditional Joseon Dynasty painting by Owon, depicting three scholars in a mountainous landscape with fluid ink and colour brushwork.
Jang Seung-eop, known by his art name Owon, remains one of the final masters of the Joseon Dynasty. This work, Samin munnyeondo, depicts three scholars in a mountainous setting, a common theme in East Asian literati painting. The composition balances the figures against the rugged terrain, using a vertical orientation that draws the eye from the foreground pines to the distant, mist-covered peaks.
Owon employs a refined brush technique, particularly in the rendering of the scholars' robes and the textured rock formations. The palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted blues, and ink washes to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The inclusion of a deer in the lower right adds a traditional symbolic element, often associated with longevity and the reclusive life of the scholar.
Unlike the more rigid academic styles of the period, Owon brought a degree of spontaneity to his work. His brushwork is fluid, capturing the essence of the figures rather than focusing on hyper-realistic detail. The scene conveys a quiet interaction, with the scholars positioned on a rocky ledge overlooking a sea of clouds. This piece reflects the late Joseon interest in Daoist themes and the idealised life of the intellectual, removed from the pressures of court politics. The technical execution demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex spatial relationships within a vertical silk format, ensuring that the human figures remain the focus despite the imposing scale of the natural environment.
